We’re all super proud of lab member Christopher Contreras, who is receiving his Ph.D. in 2021 from the Department of Criminology, Law & Society and will be an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Christopher studies neighborhood disorder, drugs and crime, public policy, and the community context of crime. In his time at ILSSC he has received numerous awards, including the 2020 Gene Carte Award for best student paper in the American Society of Criminology, the best student paper from Society for the Study of Social Problems Drinking and Drugs Division I, and the Ruth D. Peterson and Lauren J. Krivo Graduate Student Scholar Award from the Division of Communities and Place (DCP) for the best student paper. Congrats Christopher! Director Dr. Hipp receives Paul Tappan Award from Western Society of Criminology!
Director of ILSSC Dr. John R. Hipp has been selected as recipient of the Paul Tappan Award from the Western Society of Criminology (WSC). This award honors outstanding contributions to the field of criminology. Hipp would normally be recognized in Vancouver during the 2021 WSC Annual Meeting in February, although the meeting is cancelled this year.
Graduate Student Chris Contreras wins ASC Gene Carte Award for best student paper
ILSSC graduate student Chris Contreras and co-author Narae Lee (Ph.D. student in Urban Planning and Public Policy) were awarded first prize in the the 2020 Gene Carte Award for best student paper in the American Society of Criminology. This is a prestigious award given to the paper judged to be the best student paper of the year in the field. Big congrats to Chris!! Read more about the study here.
