Irvine Lab for the Study of Space and Crime
ILSSC graduate student Chris Contreras was awarded the 2019 Ruth D. Peterson Fellowship for Racial and Ethnic Diversity from the American Society of Criminology. This is a prestigious award given to promising scholars studying issues related to racial and ethnic diversity in criminology. Big congrats to Chris!!
ILSSC graduate student Seth Williams was awarded the 2019 Gil Geis Award for excellence in research. This award is given to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in research. The committee noted that “Williams’ work, which has been published in prominent national journals, involves measures of neighborhood cohesion and integration. In a short period of time, he has become one of the leading authorities in spatial criminology.” Big congrats to Seth!!
We’re all super proud of lab alumnus Rylan Simpson, who received his Ph.D. in 2019 from the Department of Criminology, Law & Society and is now an Assistant Professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. Rylan is a Canadian who is heading back home! He studies policing, and how it is related to neighborhoods and crime. He has made a particularly large contribution to the literature by utilizing experimental designs to explore the impact of police accoutrements on perceptions of the police. Congrats Rylan! “People, Places, and Context: Advances in Criminological Theory” was a two day-long symposium hosted by Criminology, Law and Society Department and, Psychological Science Department – University of California, Irvine, the Irvine Laboratory for the Study of Space and Crime (ILSSC), & Development, Disorder, and Delinquency Laboratory (3DLAB). The symposium was held on April 12, 2019 and April 13, 2019 from 8am-4:30pm at the University of California – Irvine.
On July 16, 2019 ILSSC Co-Director Dr. Charis Kubrin testified on criminal justice reform in California and lessons learned before the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on crime, terrorism and homeland security.
